Korea, the United States, and Japan agreed to work together for digital cooperation projects in the ASEAN region, including cybersecurity, mobile communication networks (Open RAN), and digital capacity building (technology training, startup competition, etc.).
Since the leaders’ commitment made at the Korea-US-Japan Summit in August 2023 to enhance digital cooperation in the digital field, discussions on Korea-US and Korea-Japan bilateral cooperation have continued. On February 1, on the occasion of the fourth ASEAN-ROK Digital Ministers’ Meeting, which brings together digital ministers of all 10 ASEAN Member States* in Singapore, high-level government officials of Korea, the US, and Japan, who are in charge of digital affairs, held a trilateral meeting on strengthening cooperation in the digital field.

The participants of the meeting are: Minister Lee Jong-Ho of Science and ICT (Korea), Nathaniel Fick, Ambassador at Large for Cybersecurity and Digital Policy (US), and Watanabe Koichi, State Minister for Internal Affairs and Communications (Japan). They agreed to strengthen cooperation in the digital field such as cybersecurity, mobile communication networks (Open RAN), and digital capacity building (technology training, startup competitions, etc.), and to continue concrete discussions through future working-level meetings.
On February 2, the Ministry of Science and ICT will hold the ASEAN-ROK Digital Ministers’ Meeting to discuss plans for digital cooperation, such as digital capacity building programs (e.g. Korea-ASEAN Digital Innovation Flagship Project) with ASEAN Member States, presenting the Digital Bill of Rights and the results of the survery on the current state of deepening digitalization.

Minister Lee said, "With the rapid changes in the global environment, science and technology have emerged as a major security issue. By enhancing digital cooperation with major countries, including the United States and Japan, we will strengthen Korea's economy and security and serve the role of a digital model nation."
