The Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT, Minister: Lim Hyesook) virtually held the 40th Space Development Committee to review and adopt three action plans including ‘2022 Action Plan for Space Development.’ The government finalized its plan for space development, with the budget of 730 billion won (or USD 610million dollars). This year, Korea will carry out projects in all three areas of projectile, satellite, and space exploration, for the first time in the history of the country. The details of the ‘2022 Action Plan for Space Development’ are as follows:

(Strategy 1) Korea will secure the next-generation projectile technology, and strengthen the private sectors’ capacity on projectile technology. For these goals, a high-performing liquid propellant rocket engine will be developed.

(Strategy 2) Korea will launch a multi-purposed, home-grown satellite, Arirang 6, and the next- generation medium-sized satellite. Arirang 6 is aiming to carry out diverse public tasks through the precise observation on the earth.

(Strategy 3) The lunar orbiter is expected to be launched this year, after a series of ground tests.

(Strategy 4) Korea’s largest space project, Korea Positioning System (KPS) development will be fully initiated this year.

(Strategy 5) To enhance the international cooperation in space development, the government will host international space events, working-level meetings, and workshops.

(Strategy 6) To foster the private-led space development ecosystem, the government will build related infrastructure and nurture talent in the space field.
The government also plans to operate the nation’s integrated satellite operation centre this year, while disclosing more information obtained from the satellite for the safety and convenience of the public. To prepare for the spatial risks, Korea will also participate in the Global Sentinel, international space drills. The second launch of KSLV-II will be prepared in June after closely investigating the cause of the abnormal flight at the first attempt.
