The Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT, Minister: Lim Hyesook) held the opening ceremony of the ‘Korea Quantum Industry Center (K-QIC)’ on January 26 at Pangyo. K-QIC is established to cultivate the quantum technology, one of the ten critical and emerging technologies that the Korean government selected to promote. The centre also shares the results of the commercialization efforts and tech developments, and supports the cooperation among industries.
The opening ceremony was joined by academia, research institutes and businesses seeking for the commercial use of the quantum technology, including Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, POSCO, KT, SKT, and LG U+. The participants shared the past achievements and discussed on how to enhance cooperation among industries, academia and research institutes in the future.
Quantum technology has come into the limelight as a game-changer, which will transform all industries across the world. Accordingly, a host of nations and global conglomerates have rushed to make investment into the technology. MSIT has also been devising strategies to support the development of the quantum technology.
Most of all, quantum cryptography communications technology demonstrated its potential to be commercialized. Since 2020, as a part of the Digital New Deal initiative, pilot-types of quantum cryptography networks have been deployed across the 26 public and private institutes. Such pilot project will help to enhance physical security while attracting the private sector’s interest, creating a virtuous cycle between research institutes and industries.
In addition, thanks to the R&D investment in the critical and emerging technologies, domestic research institutes have secured the core technologies and successfully accelerated the industrialization of the quantum technology.
MSIT will double the budget for the quantum technology this year to nurture manpower, make business models out of the technology, and develop the core quantum and computing technologies. Furthermore, the follow-up measures to the Letter of Intent signed by Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information(KISTI) and Argonne National Laboratory in the U.S., will be prepared.
