From a follower to a dominant leader - 12 National Strategic Technologies Roadmap Completed and Key Projects Selected

- The Fifth National Strategic Technology Committee under the Presidential Advisory Council on Science and Technology held
- (Strategic Roadmap) Completion of mission-centric roadmap for 12 strategic technologies by adding roadmaps for 5 areas including nuclear power and next-generation communication, big science, and essential infrastructure
- (Project) Selection of 4 additional candidate projects including AI chip-based K-Cloud, iLED (inorganic Light Emitting Diode), advanced semiconductor packaging, and biofoundry construction

[Summary]

On February 1, the Ministry of Science and ICT held the 'National Strategic Technology Committee' under the Presidential Advisory Council on Science and Technology, establishing and deciding on mission-centric strategic roadmaps in a total of 5 areas directly related to national security in big science fields such as next-generation nuclear power, aerospace & maritime, and essential technologies for the digital transformation era including next-generation communication, advanced robotics, and cybersecurity. Thus, the roadmaps for the 12 strategic technology areas have been completed.

This roadmap includes the commercialization of the world's leading small modular reactor (i-SMR) to lead carbon neutrality, the SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) antennas for ushering in the New Space Era based on Korea’s own supply chain, and the self-reliance of core components such as launch vehicles, satellite payloads, and lunar landers.

Additionally, it identified key technologies that will be the starting point for resolving problems in the robotics field such as securing international standards for 6G, overcoming obstacles and manipulating non-standard objects, and for the dissemination of hyper-scale AI such as preemptive identification of vulnerabilities in software to hacking.

Along with the existing 6 projects, 4 more projects directly linked to securing a competitive edge in the race for technological supremacy were added as key project candidates: AI chip-based K-Cloud, iLED (inorganic Light Emitting Diode), advanced semiconductor packaging, and biofoundry construction.

※ The actual implementation and detailed contents of the project will be determined after a preliminary feasibility study

With the completion of the mission-centric roadmaps for the 12 areas and the selection of projects related to the 3 game-changer technologies, the government plans to strengthen strategic investments with the goal of securing 'a super lead in convergence technology,' surpassing the follower paradigm.

Joo Young Chang, Vice Minister for the Science, Technology and Innovation Office at the MSIT (aslo Chairman of the National Strategic Technology Committee), stated, "The national strategic technology development policy, including the 12 areas' strategic roadmap and pan-governmental key projects, have been completed. Aiming to surpass the follower paradigm of the past with the 'super lead in strategic technologies,' we will focus our policy capabilities on rising as a nation leading the competition for technological supremacy by challenging and innovating in research and development, and preempting next-generation technologies, aiming for the world's best."
