- Outstanding Korean OTT
content to be introduced to global market and international investors
- Open for submission from
August 1st to 21st
The Ministry of Science and ICT (Minister Lee Jong Ho, hereafter referred
to as MSIT) announced that the Ministry would host the Asia Contents Awards
(ACA) & Global OTT Awards in October in Busan. This is the first
international competition for OTT (over-the-top streaming) content to be held
in Korea, through which the Ministry hopes that the excellence of Korean OTT platforms
and content be globally acknowledged.
The Awards aim to bring together and internationally promote individual
OTT services and their recent achievements, while also playing a role as a steppingstone
for the domestic OTT industry’s breakthrough into the global market. The
Ministry will also host a showcase targeting foreign investors, productions,
and media, to offer opportunities for co-production between domestic and
foreign OTTs, investment in large-scale projects, and overseas airing contracts
of leading Korean content.
As the main program of the 1st International OTT Festival, the
Awards will be held at 6 p.m., on October 8th (Sun.), at the outdoor
theater of Busan Cinema Center. At the event, 20 award winners will be selected
including platforms, production companies, writers, and directors. Red carpet
walks and photo-ops before the opening ceremony, and celebratory performances will
also take place, making the Global OTT Awards a distinguished international
event.
Among the 10 competition categories
of the Awards, some of the highlights include △Best Digital VFX for content that showcases outstanding cutting-edge
production technology; △Best Creative for content
or a production with notable achievements in originality of topic and format;
and △Best OTT Original
for content most well-received by international audiences with popularity and
quality of work. There will also be 7 award winners under invitation, such as: △New Tech Award for a platform that innovated OTT service
based on advanced information technology; △Innovation Award for a work that showcased a new genre and artistic
experiments in OTT service; and △K-Content International Promotion Award for a business which contributed to
Korean content’s entry into the overseas market.
Along with the Awards, the 1st International OTT Festival, planned
to be held during the Busan International Film Festival period (October 7th-8th),
include a showcase for investment attraction, where Korean platforms and
productions have opportunities to pitch for foreign investors, engage in business
matching between domestic and international partners, and sign a contract for
oversees broadcasting rights. Furthermore, a networking event for OTT service
providers, media, investors, and productions will also be held.
MSIT highlighted, “As the ACA & Global OTT Awards will be the first-ever
OTT-oriented international competition held in Korea, the Ministry will do its
best to turn the event into an opportunity for excellent Korean OTT content and
platforms to enter the overseas market by networking with international OTT
powerhouses.” The Ministry also added, “We will join forces to support Korea’s
bid to host the World Expo 2030 in Busan with the successful launch of the
Global OTT Awards and the 1st International OTT Festival.
The submission period for the Awards is from August 1st (Tue.)
to August 21st (Mon.), 2023. The evaluation committee will select
the finalists through preliminaries and finals, and candidates for categories
in competition will be announced in September. Further information on submission
