Quantum Korea 2023, a Global Festival for Quantum Research and Technology (June 26-29)

The Ministry of Science and ICT (“MSIT”; Minister Lee Jong-ho) announced that Quantum Korea 2023*, a major international event for quantum science and technology that sheds light on the global trends of quantum innovation ecosystem, will be held from June 26 (Mon) to June 29 (Thu) at Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) in celebration of the “First Year of Korea‘s Quantum Jump” in 2023.

* “Quantum Korea” is an event that expands and reorganizes the Quantum Information Week held by the MSIT three times since 2020

▶Opening Ceremony: June 26 (Monday), 2023, 13:00-13:40 / Art Hall 2, Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP)

The opening ceremony will be attended by the Quantum Korea 2023 Organizing Committee (Chairman: Kim Jae-wan, Vice President of Korea Institute for Advanced Study) and guests from Korea and abroad, including government and officials and stakeholders to announce the start of Quantum Korea 2023. The organizing committee plans to invite distinguished intellectuals, including Dr. John F. Clauser, to give congratulatory remarks, and hold an awards ceremony and other celebratory events in a bid to garner public interest.

▶International Conference on Quantum Information: June 26 (Mon) 13:50~, June 28 (Wed) - 29 (Thu) / Art Hall 2 , Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP)

The International Conference on Quantum Information will feature a keynote speech from Dr. John F. Clauser (June 26), Dr. Peter W. Shor (June 28), and Dr. Charles H. Bennett (June 29). During the three-day conference, researchers from Korea and abroad will share the latest research, global trends, and future needs and directions, allowing the researchers to network with their counterparts. On June 27 (Tue), Dr. Kim Youngseok, the lead author of the research paper recently published on the international journal Nature's cover page, will be chairing a special seminar at the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST). Dr. Kim's paper was on quantum computing that surpasses the existing supercomputer simulations, based on fault-tolerant processors.

▶International research and Industry exhibitions: June 26 (Mon) - 29 (Thu)/ Art Hall 1, Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP)

There are growing interests and participation from the industry in quantum on the back of rapid technological advancement. The exhibitions will feature presentations on the latest research findings and products from government funded-research institutes, three major Korean telecom operators, SMEs, startups, and more than 50 businesses and institutions from abroad, including IBM, IonQ, Nokia, Zurich Instruments, Quantum Machines. There will be a networking session for the participants to explore new business opportunities and partnerships.

▶Side Events: government events, tech contest, cultural event, etc.

On the occasion of Quantum Korea, the MSIT will hold a series of meetings and workshop with its international partners in a bid to strengthen international cooperation, including an inter-agency cooperation MoU signing ceremony (June 27), ROK-Japan Science and technology Director-General level meeting (June 27), ROK-UK Joint Committee Meeting on Science and Technology (June 28), ROK-EU Quantum Science and Technology Expert Workshop (June 29). To foster a vibrant domestic quantum ecosystem, the event will feature a presentation on the overseas training program outcomes for postgraduate and doctoral talent and an admission briefing session for quantum graduate schools. The launch ceremony of the Special Committee for Standardization of Quantum Cryptography will also be held during the event.
