- MSIT·NPA kicks off Policelab 2.0, an R&D project tailored to serve policing duties

The Ministry of Science and ICT (Minister Lee Jong Ho, hereafter referred to as ‘MSIT’) and the National Police Agency (Commissioner General Yoon Hee Keun, hereafter referred to as ‘NPA’) held 2023 kickoff meeting for the research and development (R&D) project tailored to serve policing duties, called ‘Policelab 2.0’ on July 18th (Tue), at Moonhwa Madang, NPA Headquarters.

Policelab 2.0 is a joint initiative by MSIT and NPA, aimed at developing technologies to address public safety issues perceived by the public and the police. The government will invest a total of 44.5 billion won to this project, planned from 2021 to 2025.

Four new research projects are to be included to the initiative in 2023, which are statement support system customized for children witnesses, AI-based automatic search system for footprints and fingerprints, smart preventive system for speeding in children’s safety zones, and risk prediction and analysis system for safe crowd management.

Importantly, ‘statement support system customized for children witnesses’ development project will utilize AI-based technology to analyze statement contents and psychological
·emotional state of a child witness in real-time, supporting individual-sensitive investigations. It is expected that the system will ease psychological burden posed on children when they are surrounded by unfamiliar setting (such as an interrogation room) and minimize secondary damage, aiding to a more witness-friendly environment.

Officials at MSIT and NPA stated, “We hope the Policelab 2.0 initiative to contribute in improving convenience of the public and the police, and in reinforcing public safety by providing more effective solutions in policing duties. Both organizations will make dedicated efforts to improve quality of police service by proactively communicating with on-site, so that all 23 research project results compiled over the past 3 years can be further utilized and disseminated.”
