The Ministry of Science and ICT (Minister Lee Jong-ho, “MSIT”) announced that it successfully secured the hosting of the "Cybersecurity International Standard Conference" in the latter half of this year in Korea, at the International Telecommunication Union Telecommunication Standardization Sector (ITU-T) Cybersecurity Study Group 17 (SG17) International Conference held in Geneva, Switzerland on March 3.

ITU-T SG17 is a study group that oversees international cybersecurity standards and has been chaired by Korea (Chairman: Professor Yeom Heung-yeol of Soonchunhyang University) since 2017. Through international conferences held twice a year, the group supports activities such as the adoption of international standards and the provision of technical guidelines for the development of international cybersecurity standards.

The conference held in the first half of this year took place from February 21 to March 3 in Geneva, Switzerland. At this conference, two international standards for vehicle communication security developed by Korea were finally approved, and two international standards for application service security were pre-adopted for the process of collecting opinions from member countries for international standard adoption in the future. In addition, five newly proposed standardization tasks, including software supply chain security, were approved.

The 2023 ITU-T SG17 Cybersecurity International Standard Conference will be held in Ilsan KINTEX (Goyang-si, Gyeonggi Province) from August 29th (Tuesday) to September 8th (Friday). Over 350 cybersecurity experts from more than 50 countries around the world will attend to have heated discussions on international cybersecurity standards development.

In September of last year, President Yoon Suk-yeol announced the New York Initiative, in which he presented the digital innovation vision of Korea and a digital new order for realizing universal values of freedom, human rights, and solidarity. He declared that Korea, as a model digital country, will share its achievements in digital democracy with global citizens.

The hosting of this ITU-T SG17 International Standard Conference, which is part of the realization of the New York Declaration, is expected to provide an opportunity for Korea to share its cybersecurity technology and success stories in international standardization and jointly explore ways to safely utilize cybersecurity technology that safeguards the digital space, creating a new order for free digital citizens.

Kim Jung-sam, the Director-General for Cyber Security and Network Policy Bureau, emphasized that the ITU-T SG17 International Standard Conference is "the world's top international standardization meeting in which cybersecurity experts from around the world participate“ and stated that "by hosting this international conference, Korea will take the lead in international cybersecurity standardization, using it as an opportunity to lead the world market with our excellent cybersecurity technology."
