The Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT, Minister: Lee Jong-Ho) announced the five (5) key strategies in an aim to build the new national innovation system, and make national progress with technological and digital innovation.

The first strategy is to design more mission-oriented R&D systems. The critical missions are to promote strategic technologies and resolve social issues. To this end, MSIT is going to take an integrated approach by coordinating the R&D budget allocation for all ministries, and take up on a new project to nurture the national strategic technologies such as chips, aerospace technologies and AI, to maintain super gap.

Secondly, MSIT will attract large volumes of investment from the private sector and find the next technologies to feed the nation for the next 10~20 years. Source technologies and key patents of quantum, cutting-edge bio, and 6G technologies will be sought, with the partnership between the public and private sectors. In addition, the government will support domestic companies in the field of chips, Small Module Reactors, digital emerging industries and cyber security, so that they can enter the global market faster. In particular, to propel the progress of space development, the government will establish Korea Space Agency and nurture a corporation that manages the entire lifecycle of the rocket development from design to lift-off.

The third strategy is to produce bright talent. In the short-term, MSIT will create undergraduate curriculums in the fields that suffer the manpower shortage, such as semiconductor, in partnership with the Ministry of Education. There will be more programs in place in a much longer-term, as well.

Fourth, the government will enhance the national digital capability with the private sector, to spread the digital innovation across the nation. We will secure global AI competence while improving fundamentals of domestic software industry. A digital platform government will be created with the one-stop digital service for the general public and voucher-based projects that support digital transformation of enterprises.

Lastly, MSIT will harness scientific and digital technologies in this non-contact era, to support the vulnerable and resolve social issues. The efforts include the roll-out of diversified 5G phone plans, a wider deployment of high-speed internet network and public Wi-Fi across rural areas.

Apart from such key strategies, MSIT will revisit various regulations to overhaul the public agencies and public commissions.
