The Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT, Minister: Lim Hyesook) finalized the second basic plan for the International Science and Business Belt (ISBB, ‘22~’30) on March 22. The ISBB is a multi-regional project, designed to nurture several regions, in a systematic and integrated manner, by converging basic research in science and businesses.
Under the plan, the following three strategies have been presented: i) environment improvement for basic research, ii) producing achievements linking science and business opportunities, iii) bolstering the nation’s status.
To provide a better environment for basic research, additional research buildings will be provided at the Institute for Basic Science (IBS) campus, along with extra facilities and equipment for large-scale research projects.
To produce outputs from the ISBB project, the government is planning to increase the number of companies that are founded based on basic research outputs, or that are going to use technology after transferred from academia, to 300.
Lastly, to boost the nation’s status, the government will reinforce regional cooperation and exchanges of basic research achievements among academia, businesses and research institutes, creating a super cluster for basic research.
