MSIT to share Korea's experience in science and ICT and education with the globe (Jun 30)

- Eight webinar held by TF for international cooperation in COVID-19 response


The Korean government will hold the eight web seminar to share Korea's response to COVID-19, including related policy and experience, at 4 p.m. on July 1.

The special webinar on Korea's response to COVID-19 has been managed by a task force team for international cooperation in prevention and control, along with the collaboration of 12 ministries, including the Ministry of Science and ICT, the Ministry of Health and Welfare, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and six relevant agencies including Korea Health Industry Development Institute, Korea Foundation for International Healthcare, and Korea International Cooperation Agency, systematically sharing Korea's experience by topic.

o The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (2nd Vice Minister) organizes the TF to systematically respond to requests of sharing Korea's experience in the fight against COVID-19, involving related ministries (vice minister level) and agencies
- Coordination work on international cooperation in coronavirus prevention and control


o 12 government ministries and six agencies in participation
- 12 government ministries: Office for Government Policy Coordination, Ministry of Strategy and Finance, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Science and ICT, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of the Interior and Safety, Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, Ministry of Health and Welfare, Centers for Disease Control, National Fire Agency, and National Police Agency
- Six relevant agencies: Korea Health Industry Development Institute, Korea Foundation for International Healthcare, National Medical Center, Korea International Medical Association, Korea International Cooperation Agency, Korea Foundation


The eight webinar on science, ICT and education is organized by the Ministry of Science and ICT. The Ministry of Health and Welfare, the Ministry of Education, Korea Education and Research Information Service, Institut Pasteur Korea, and Seegene will participate and the International Cooperation Agency and the National Research Foundation will support the event.


The eight webinar will be presided over by Director General Jung Hee-kwon of the MSIT's International Cooperation Bureau and start by the opening remarks of Vice Minister Jeong Byungseon. The presentations will be as follows.


① Response to COVID-19 using science and ICT (Director Lee Chung-won of the International Cooperation Coordination Division, MSIT) ② COVID-19 test kit development using ICT (Executive Director Lee Dae-hoon, Seegene) ③ Current status of development of COVID-19 treatments (Wang-Shick Ryu, CEO of Institut Pasteur Korea) ④ Online opening of schools to respond to COVID-19 (Director Kim Jin-sook, Korea Education and Research Information Service)


- The Ministry of Science and ICT will give a presentation on how science and ICT have been used in testing, tracing, treating, and social distancing.


Introduce the use of ICT, such as using AI in test kit development, quarantine and safety app, contact tracing system, online learning, and telework and efforts of various sectors and international cooperation for developing vaccines and treatments


- Seegene's presentation will cover how ICT can be used in swift development of diagnostic kits and gene targeting against COVID-19.


Introduction of how the test kit could be developed rapidly and how it received emergency use approval of the Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety and the USFDA by standardizing and computerizing the design, experiment, analysis of the product through the AI automated system


- Institut Pasteur Korea will share the research findings in drug repurposing, discovering already approved treatments that are effective against COVID-19.


Present on how "Phenomic screening," image analysis technology to evaluate the efficacy, has been used to select about 20 strong drug candidates after screening some 3,000 drugs approved by the USFDA, and the current status of clinical trials for two drugs, which are ciclesonide and nafamostat.


- Korea Education and Research Information Service (KERIS) will present on how ICT has been adopted in preparation for online opening of schools to address any loss in learning due to the pandemic. The presentation will also point out how the public online learning system has been strengthened and operated and how this experience will be linked to future education.


Present on the rapid expansion of the Cyber Learning System in just two weeks to accommodate up to 3 million users, which previously had about 40,000 users on average. Cooperation between the public and private sector and voluntary participation of teachers have culminated in a stable service offering 42 million items of learning content as of June.


When the presentation session is over, experts will give answers to pre-collected questions from other countries and take questions in real time for 30 minutes.


The webinar will start from 4 p.m., Korean time, for one hour and 40 minutes in Korean, with simultaneous interpretation in English, French, and Spanish. Real-time participation is available on www.medicalkoreawebinar.or.kr.


The webinar will be repeated at 11 p.m. on July 1 for countries having difficulty watching in real time due to time differences. The videos will be uploaded later on the website.

The webinars have been held since May for seven times, with various themes, attended by a total of 2,900 people from 120 countries.
* The 1st to third webinars addressed the overall health and infection prevention and control, the fourth addressed immigration and quarantine, and the fifth addressed contact tracing and management of those in self-isolation, the sixth addressed prevention and control in daily life, and the seventh addressed economic policy


The final 9th webinar will be held on July 8, on infection prevention and control during elections.
