- Second Korea-Germany Vice-Ministerial Digital Dialogue Held
- MSIT Strengthens cooperation with Germany in digital innovation fields, including AI, Digital Twins, Cloud Computing, Quantum, and 6G mobile networks
The Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT) held the Second Korea-Germany Digital Dialogue with the German Federal Ministry of Digital and Transport (BMDV) on January 21st in Seoul.
The Korea-Germany Digital Dialogue is a regular consultative body launched based on the joint declaration in 2022. It aims to strengthen cooperation and the exchange of best practices between the two countries in the era of digital transformation, with the dialogue held every other year. This second digital dialogue follows the inaugural meeting held in Berlin, Germany, in 2022.
The Dialogue was co-chaired by Vice Minister Kang Do-hyun of MSIT and Vice Minister Stefan Schnorr of BMDV. The Korean delegation included representatives from MSIT, the National Information Society Agency (NIA), the National IT Industry Promotion Agency (NIPA), the Institute for Information and Communication Technology Planning and Evaluation (IITP), and the Telecommunications Technology Association (TTA), while the German delegation included representatives from BMDV, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the German Aerospace Center (DLR), German software company SAP, the German Chamber of Commerce in Korea, and the Friedrich Naumann Foundation.
The main topics of the second digital dialogue included AI, digital twin, internet-based resource sharing (cloud computing), quantum, and 6G mobile communication technologies, identified as core technologies to enhance the digital transformation and growth drivers for both countries. Both sides shared their policies, strategies, and best practices in each technology field, and discussed cooperation plans, such as joint research on AI that reflects the strengths of each country, leadership in international standards for digital twins, quantum, 6G mobile networks, and Open RAN (Open Radio Access Networks). In particular, the two countries explored ways to jointly contribute to the establishment of international norms for AI and strengthen private-sector cooperation by promoting Open RAN collaboration between Korean and German companies to facilitate smooth mutual market access.
Vice Minister Kang Do-Hyun stated, “Digital technology can create greater value through international cooperation,” adding, “I expect that this Korea-Germany Digital Dialogue will be an opportunity to unite the digital capabilities of both countries and lead global digital innovation.”
Both countries agreed to proceed with a joint work plan, including expert workshops and regular working-level meetings, to implement the topics discussed during the meeting. The third Korea-Germany Digital Dialogue is scheduled to be held in Germany in 2026.
