- 12th Korea-China Meeting and 5th Korea-Japan Meeting of the Director Generals for Radio Wave held in Korea
The Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT) (“MSIT”; Minister Lee Jong-ho) announced that it will hold back-to-back director-general-level meetings with China (May 8) and Japan (May 22) in Korea to effectively prepare for the World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC*-27) to be held in 2027 and promote global cooperation in the field of radio communications.
* World Radiocommunication Conferences (WRC): Organized by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the conference is held every four years to decide on important issues related to global spectrum distribution and radio communications, and is attended by more than 3,400 government officials and experts from 193 countries.
On May 8, the 12th Korea-China Meeting of Director Generals for Radio Wave was held in Seoul, with Choi Byeong-taek, Director General of the Radio Policy Bureau of the MSIT, and Qi Feng, Director General of the Bureau of Radio Regulation under the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) of China as co-chairs. The two countries exchanged their views on various issues of interest, including their respective mobile communications frequency policies, the current status of frequency interference between the two countries, and the need for international cooperation on radio waves.
In particular, the meeting discussed key issues that will be discussed at WRC-27, including next-generation frequencies such as 6G and communication policies between low-orbit satellites and smartphones. Korea requested China's support for the selection of Korean radio experts to serve as chairpersons of the APG*-27, which will be decided at the first meeting of the APG*-27 (June 3-6, 2024, in China).
* APT Conference Preparatory Group for WRC (APG): A meeting of 38 countries in the Asia-Pacific region to prepare a common position on the agenda of WRC-27.
On May 22, the Fifth Korea-Japan Meeting of Director Generals for Radio Wave will be held, with the Japanese side headed by Naohiko Ogihara, Director General of the Radio Department of Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC). The two countries will discuss cooperation on mobile spectrum policies, the WRC-27 agenda, and APG chairmanship.
“Cooperation with our neighbors Japan and China is of utmost importance for efficient and stable radio wave utilization and management,” said Director General Choi of the MSIT. “This meeting with China was a good opportunity to solidify the radio wave cooperation system between the two countries.”
He added, “We will continue to discuss radio cooperation and international issues at the upcoming Korea-Japan Meeting of Director Generals for Radio Wave, and we expect that these exchanges will further strengthen the foundation for radio cooperation between Korea, Japan, and China, which are leading ICT countries in Asia.”
