- Information sessions for Korean researchers after becoming the first Asian country to conclude the association negotiations

The Ministry of Science and ICT (“MSIT”; Minister Lee Jong-Ho)announced that an information session on Horizon Europe for domestic researchers will be held on Thursday, May 16, at 14:00 at Korea University's Aju Hall, as Korea's association to Horizon Europe draws near.
Horizon Europe is the world's and the EU's largest multilateral research and innovation funding program that will run for seven years from 2021 to 2027. The total budget set for the program is €95.5 billion (approximately KRW 140 trillion). Korea concluded formal negotiations on March 25, 2024. If future procedures proceed smoothly without delay, Korea is poised to attain Associated Country status to the Horizon Europe program starting in 2025. This will make Korea a third non-European country, following New Zealand (2023) and Canada (2024), and the first Asian country to become an Associated Country to the program.
* The EU has implemented the Framework Program (FP) since 1984 to prevent investment duplication among member states and foster innovation within the European R&D ecosystem. This initiative establishes a unified system for selecting, evaluating, managing, and funding R&D activities. The Horizon Europe Program is the ninth EU Research and Innovation Framework Program.
While continuing the follow-up process to conclude the final agreement, the MSIT will hold a series of briefings for Korean researchers, who are eligible to participate in the Horizon Europe program as associate member country researchers starting 2025, to enhance their understanding of the Horizon Europe program and encourage their participation.
The first briefing will be held for researchers from Korean universities. First, the Delegation of the European Union to the Republic of Korea will give an overview of the Horizon Europe program, including its purpose and structure, and then the MSIT will give a presentation on how Korea joined Horizon Europe as an associate country, answer frequently asked questions, and explain support measures for domestic researchers, followed by a more detailed Q&A session.
The second briefing will be held on Tuesday, June 4, at the Korea Institute of Energy Research (KIER) headquartered in Daejeon, focusing on Korean researchers, and a third briefing will be held at the end of June (location TBD) for Horizon Europe participants and project evaluators.
