Minister Lim Hyesook of Science and ICT paid a visit to Washington D.C., the United States on December 13 to 14 to have meetings with Director Eric Lander of Office of Science and Technology Policy(OSTP), Chairperson Jessica Rosenworcel of Federal Communications Commission(FCC), and Director Sethuraman Panchanathan of National Science Foundation(NSF).

At the meeting with the OSTP, Minister Lim and Director Lander had profound discussions on building alliance in the cutting-edge technology sector. The two parties agreed to carry out cooperative activities in diverse areas including semiconductors, standardization of emerging technologies, and energy innovation technologies as part of follow-ups to the Korea-US summit held last May. Both also decided to use the Joint Committee Meeting on Scientific and Technical Cooperation as a main channel to enhance cooperation between the public and the private sectors and reached the consensus for the need to launch a fund for global cooperation on technology development.

The meeting was followed by a talk with Chairperson Jessica Rosenworcel of the FCC. Minister Lim and the chairperson, both of whom are the first female leaders of each organization, discussed the future plans for development and deployment of communications and network systems. On the next day, Minister Lim visited the NSF to meet Director Panchanathan. Stressing the importance of expediting the process to conclude the MOU for cooperation on quantum technologies, Minister Lim asked for the national-level support for joint research and talent exchanges. As part of expanding the talent network, the Director pledged to pursue a joint workshop for researchers of the two nations. Further discussions are expected to continue next year via face-to-face meetings.

Apart from such meetings with key institutions, Minister Lim bestowed Order of Science and Technology Merit, Ungbi Class, to the sitting Deputy Assistant Secretary Andrew Griffith on behalf of the former executive John Herczeg of Department of Energy, who went on the leave for health issues, for having made great contribution to the successful completion of the joint research project dubbed as Joint Fuel Cycle Studies(JFCS).
