5.8577 Tln won to be Invested in Science and ICT R&D 

 

- MSIT finalizes its Comprehensive Implementation Plan for Research and Development Projects in 2024 - 

 

The Ministry of Science and ICT (Minister Lee Jong Ho, MSIT) is set to embark on an ambitious journey with the announcement of its Comprehensive Implementation Plan for Research and Development (R&D) Projects in 2024 by investing a total of 5.8577 trillion won.  

 

The Comprehensive Implementation Plan, delineating the trajectory and sector-specific implementation strategies, allocates 4.6909 trillion won for R&D in science and technology and 1.1668 trillion won for R&D in the ICT and broadcasting sector.  

 

Against the backdrop of escalating global competition for technological supremacy and the national imperative for R&D innovation, the government's investment aims to make the country a global science, technology and ICT powerhouse by leading R&D innovation. 

 

Key Investment Areas: 

 

1. Empowering Researchers: A core focus of the investment is to empower researchers in pursuing innovative and challenging R&D. The plan includes robust support for excellent research across diverse fields at every stage of researchers’ growth, strengthening investment in basic research for budding researchers. Furthermore, large-scale international joint research and human resource exchange initiatives are set to enable domestic researchers to collaborate with world-class institutions. 

 

2. Economic Vitality Based on Science, Technology and ICT: Strategic investments are earmarked for securing advanced technologies critical for technological leadership. Targeted areas include advanced biotechnology, flagship technologies (semiconductors, displays, secondary batteries), and quantum technologies. The plan also extends R&D investments to stimulate private sector innovation in big science such as space and nuclear energy. 

 

3. Key Source Technologies in Digital Sector: A heightened focus on securing digital core source technologies encompasses investments in artificial intelligence, next-generation AI semiconductor technology, 6G communication technology, quantum cryptographic communication, and cybersecurity. Additional emphasis is placed on future digital innovation and promising technology development, including the development and demonstration of autonomous vehicle technologies that can change paradigm of our daily lives. 

 

4. Spreading Innovation and Deep Tech Industrialization: MSIT is committed to spreading the benefits of innovative research achievements to regional areas. To this end, the Ministry intends to make proactive investments to ensure outcomes of public research in cutting-edge science and technology can lead to new industries for future growth through commercialization of science, startup initiatives, and technology transfer. Simultaneously, ongoing support for technology development will be provided so that ICT research results can translate into tangible technological innovation and the creation of new products and services. 

 

5. Fostering Global Talent: Acknowledging the importance of nurturing global talent, the implementation plan aims to cultivate master's and doctoral-level professionals in 12 strategic technology fields. Specialized support is provided for AI-related academic and graduate programs to foster experts who can lead new digital industries. 

 

In response to the dynamic landscape of R&D, MSIT is introducing a comprehensive system improvement plan to bolster world-class research initiatives. Additionally, guidelines for project continuity and global R&D directives have been established, ensuring stability and excellence in research endeavors.
