The Ministry of
Science and ICT (MSIT) attended the OECD Global Technology Forum on June 6 at
the OECD headquarters in Paris, France on June 6. The forum was initiated at
the OECD Digital Economy Ministerial Meeting held in Spain in December 2022 and
is expected to play a leading role in identifying long-term opportunities and
challenges resulting from technological advancements and shaping the policy
discourse on new technologies.
The forum was held
under the theme "Shaping Our Future at the Tech Frontier". In-depth
discussions on immersive technologies and synthetic biology and dialogues among
multilateral stakeholders examining the economic and social impacts of
technological advancements centered on three topics: responsible development
and utilization of technology based on universal human values, new technologies
for addressing climate change and promoting resilient societies, and the
digital and technological divide.
MSIT General
Director Song Sang-hoon participated as a keynote speaker in the session on
"Responsible, Value-based and Rights-Oriented Technology". He
emphasized the need for all actors involved in all stages of the technology
lifecycle to play a responsible role to respect universal human values such as
freedom, human rights, and solidarity, thereby enhancing the social credibility
of new technologies. He introduced the 'Metaverse Ethical Principles' and 'AI
Ethical Principles' as Korea's main policies to this end as well. Moreover, by
sharing plans to establish a “Digital Bill of Rights”, one of the major
measures to realize the new digital order, leading by Korea.
MSIT commented
that "The forum was a meaningful opportunity to share with OECD members
the main contents of the new digital order that Korea is establishing to ensure
civil liberties and fair opportunities." "We will work closely with
the OECD as a global digital model country to lead the discussion on necessary norms
and reflect our positions and policies," said the ministry.
