- Introducing 32 New Tasks Across 15 Projects in Quantum Science and Technology
The Ministry of Science and ICT (Minister Yoo Sang-im, hereinafter ‘MSIT’) has announced plans to launch 32 new tasks across 15 projects in 2025 to enhance Korea’s quantum science and technology ecosystem and lead global innovation.
Quantum science and technology is recognized as a key field that will drive future industrial transformation. It is one of the three game-changing technologies prioritized for strategic investment. For 2025, MSIT has allocated a dedicated budget of KRW 198 billion, reflecting a 54.1% increase from 2024. A total of 24 projects will be implemented, with 15 projects introducing 32 new tasks.
Technology Development
One of the key new projects is the "Quantum Computing Service and Utilization Infrastructure" initiative, which aims to install verified quantum computers domestically and provide them to research institutions, laying the groundwork for the commercialization of quantum computing technology. Additionally, MSIT will promote the "Quantum ICT Engineering Technology Development (Communications)" project to localize quantum communication materials and achieve technological self-reliance, strengthening industrial competitiveness, while also launching the "Quantum Metrology (Development of Quantum Information Measurement Methodologies and Core Technologies)" project to explore next-generation quantum measurement methodologies essential for advancing quantum technologies.
International Collaboration
The "Global Partnership Program for Leading Universities in Quantum Science and Technology" will strategically expand international cooperation in the quantum field by leveraging global partnerships established by domestic universities. This project aims to secure world-class quantum technologies through collaboration with leading global institutions.
Based on this, an international cooperation platform will be established to facilitate seamless collaboration and knowledge exchange among quantum experts worldwide, fostering an ecosystem for innovation and partnership.
Talent Development
In addition, MSIT will launch the "Quantum Research Hub Project" in 2025, selecting two research hubs that will serve as focal points for research and development, talent cultivation, and infrastructure expansion. These hubs will be led by government-funded research institutes in collaboration with academia and industry. One hub will focus on next-generation quantum research, while the other will specialize in applied quantum research. Each hub will operate an "Open Joint Quantum Lab" to facilitate collaborative research among academia, industry, and research institutes, supporting the development of highly skilled professionals and the establishment of critical infrastructure.
Kwon Hyun-jun, Director-General of R&D Policy at MSIT, stated: "With 2025 designated as the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology by the United Nations, we will establish this year as the foundation for quantum industrialization. Alongside fundamental research, we will thoroughly prepare for the commercialization of quantum technologies."
Further details on the new tasks for 2025 can be found on the websites of the National Research Foundation of Korea (KRF) and the Institute of Information & Communications Technology Planning & Evaluation (IITP) once the official announcements are made.
