MSIT Signs an MoU with the Italian Space Agency

President Yoon Suk Yeol and Italian President Sergio Mattarella reaffirms their commitment for Korea-Italy space cooperation

- MSIT-ASI sign an MoU on space cooperation

The Ministry of Science and ICT (“MSIT”; Minister Lee Jong-Ho) announced that Minister Lee and President Teodoro Valente of the Italian Space Agency (ASI) signed an MoU* on bilateral space cooperation in the presence of Italian President Sergio Mattarella and South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol on November 8, 2023.

The MoU was signed with the aim of further strengthening future cooperation in space development for peaceful purposes, building on the existing cooperative relationship between Korea and Italy. Italy is a country active in space development and has excellent satellite technologies, and it is expected that the two countries will solidify their partnership in the coming years.

With the MoU, Korea and Italy will continue cooperation in a wide range of areas such as space science, space exploration, earth observation (environmental monitoring and disaster management), synthetic aperture radar (SAR) technology, and promotion of space sector initiatives for business and trade. They will promote joint research on areas of common interest, facilitate data and information exchanges, and hold joint seminars and workshops.

[Overview on the MoU]

• (Objective) Strengthening cooperation in the field of space activities for peaceful purposes between Korea's MSIT and the Italian Space Agency
• (Areas of cooperation) △Space science, △Space exploration, △Earth observation with special attention to environmental monitoring and disaster management, △Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) technology, △Promotion of space sector initiatives for businesses and trade

The two countries will expand exchanges and advance cooperation in space development to realize the space economy. Following the MoU signing ceremony, the MSIT and the ASI held a working-level meeting the next day to discuss the details regarding the cooperation, including implementation plans and follow-up actions.
