- Led by the Ministry of Science and ICT, Korea’s control tower for AI policy, the Alliance unites industry, academia, research, and government to advance Physical AI
The “Physical AI Global Alliance”, bringing together major domestic and international stakeholders across industry, academia, research, and government, will be officially launched on September 29 (Mon.).
The Alliance, established to secure global leadership in Physical AI, will be co-chaired by seven leaders: the Ministers of Science and ICT (MSIT), Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE), and SMEs and Startups (MSS); National Assembly Members Chung Dong-young (Democratic Party of Korea) and Choi Hyung-du (People Power Party); the Presidents of the Korea AI Software Industry Association (KOSA) and the Korea Automobile & Mobility Association (KAMA). Participants will include leading demand- and supply-side organizations in Physical AI—such as Hyundai Motor Company, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, and LG AI Research—alongside universities and research institutes. Moving forward, the Alliance will serve as a national platform for cross-sector collaboration.
Attendees will include Minister Bae Kyunghoon of MSIT; Vice Chair Im Moon-young of the National AI Strategy Committee; vice ministers of MOTIE and MSS; National Assembly Members Chung Dong-young, Lee Sung-yoon (Democratic Party), and Choi Hyung-doo (People Power Party); KOSA Chairman Joh Joon-hee; KAMA President & CEO Kang Nam-hoon; LG AI Research Head Lim Woo-hyung; Doosan Robotics CEO Kim Min-pyo; Kakao Healthcare CEO Hwang Hee; SK Shieldus CEO Min Ki-sik; AWS Korea Head Yoon Jung-won; and KAIST Professor Jang Young-jae, among other key figures across the Physical AI ecosystem.
The event will also feature a presentation on the future direction of Physical AI development by NIPA Vice President Kim Deuk-joong and policy proposals for Alliance operations by KOSA Chairman Joh Joon-hee. These sessions will reaffirm the Alliance’s commitment to serve as a strategic gateway for expanding the Physical AI industry domestically and globally, and for strengthening competitiveness in the global tech race.
The Alliance will consist of ten subcommittees: five ecosystem-based (Technology, Solutions, Governance, Talent, Global Cooperation) and five domain-based (ADV – AI Defined Vehicle, Fully Autonomous Robots, Core Industries, Wellness Tech, and ACR – AI Computing Resources). The National IT Industry Promotion Agency (NIPA) will serve as the secretariat.
The ecosystem subcommittees will be led by LG AI Research Head Lim Woo-hyung, (Technology); Naver Cloud CEO Kim Yu-won (Solutions); SK Shieldus CEO Min Ki-sik (Governance); KAIST President Lee Kwang-hyung (Talent); and AWS Korea Head Yoon Jung-won (Global Cooperation). They will develop public–private cooperation models, strategies for international standardization, and policy roadmaps to secure an early lead in the global Physical AI competition.
The domain subcommittees will be chaired by Hyundai Motor Company CEO Lee Dong-seok (ADV); Doosan Robotics CEO Kim Min-pyo (Fully Autonomous Robots); HD Hyundai Heavy Industries President & CEO Lee Sang-kyun (Core Industries); Kakao Healthcare CEO Hwang Hee (Wellness Tech); and FuriosaAI CEO Baek Jun-ho and Rebellions CEO Park Sung-hyun (joint chairs of ACR). These groups will focus on promoting the practical application and field deployment of Physical AI technologies aligned with Korea’s industrial strengths, while also addressing challenges identified on the ground.
In addition to the more than 250 companies and organizations attending today’s launch event, the Alliance will remain open to domestic and global entities engaged in or seeking to participate in the field of Physical AI, with membership set to expand through the end of the year.
The Alliance will also coordinate with the recently launched “Manufacturing AX Alliance” to share best practices and facilitate communication between demand- and supply-side companies through the Industrial AX and Ecosystem Subcommittees of the National AI Strategy Committee, chaired by the President.
At the launch, Vice Chair Im Moon-young of the National AI Strategy Committee congratulated the establishment of the Alliance, stating:
“As the national control tower for AI strategy, the Committee has designated Physical AI as a core strategic priority. We will provide full policy support to ensure Korea secures a leading position in the global market.”
Minister Bae Kyunghoon of MSIT emphasized:
“Securing leadership in Physical AI is crucial for Korea’s ambition to become one of the world’s top three AI powers. The government—through MSIT, MOTIE, and MSS—will pool its capabilities and work closely with universities and companies to build a robust Physical AI ecosystem that not only drives domestic innovation but also extends Korea’s global reach.”
