The Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister Bae Kyunghoon), as the government’s dedicated ministry for artificial intelligence, announced that it will begin full-scale implementation of a range of AI competency development programs designed to deepen employees’ understanding of AI and strengthen their ability to apply it in their work.

First, the Ministry will host a monthly “AI Experts Brown-Bag Seminar,” inviting top domestic and international AI specialists to share the latest technology and market trends and provide first-hand insights from the field. The first session, scheduled for Wednesday, December 3, will feature Professor Chong Song, Head of KAIST’s Kim Jaechul Graduate School of Artificial Intelligence, who will deliver a lecture on “Trends and Prospects in AI Technology Development.”

Second, starting this month, MSIT will operate an open information-sharing platform, the “AI Trend Sensing Hub,” which will analyze emerging AI issues around the world and serve as a source of policy insight. The platform will provide real-time updates on global and domestic AI trends, analytical reports from major research institutions and big tech companies, and expert commentary. By leveraging collective intelligence, the Ministry aims to proactively identify major AI policy challenges and devise timely response strategies, thereby strengthening policy planning.

Third, MSIT will introduce an “On-site One-day AI Internship Program” as part of its engagement with companies at the forefront of AI innovation. Rather than making perfunctory site visits, the program will allow employees to gain hands-on experience in tasks such as building AI training datasets and developing and applying AI models. This is expected to strengthen the professional expertise of staff in charge of AI policy and support the development of policies that deliver tangible benefits in the field.

Fourth, the Ministry will promote AI-driven administrative innovation. Centered on the “AI Innovators,” a group of young MSIT staff, the Ministry will create leading examples of AI-based administrative innovation—such as drafting press releases and summarizing reports—using the “Pan-Governmental AI Infrastructure” and the “Intelligent Work Management Platform,” both launched last month. Through these efforts, MSIT aims to break away from traditional work practices and identify additional needs for improving and expanding government AI systems.

Deputy Prime Minister Bae Kyunghoon emphasized, “As the ministry responsible for AI policy, MSIT must fully understand and actively harness artificial intelligence more effectively than any other agency,” adding, “Let us take the lead in applying AI to administrative innovation and spread best practices across the government, while developing and implementing high-quality policies grounded in AI expertise.”
