MSIT Attends G7 Industry, Digital and Technology Ministers’ Meeting

- Discussions on strengthening international cooperation in emerging technology such as AI and quantum technologies

The Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT, Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Science and ICT Bae Kyung-hoon) announced that Vice Minister Ryu Je-myung will lead the delegation to the G7 Industry, Digital and Technology Ministers’ Meeting held in Montréal, Canada, from December 8 to 9, 2025 (local time).

Korea has been invited to the G7 Industry, Digital and Technology Ministers’ Meeting this year as one of the key nations in emerging technology, following last year's invitation. Building on the outcomes of the G7 Summit attended by President Lee Jae Myung in June this year, this meeting will bring together high-level officials from G7 Member Countries*, Invited Countries**, and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). They will engage in in-depth discussions on international issues and cooperation strategies in emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and quantum technologies.

This meeting is expected to be a significant opportunity for Korea to expand its leadership in emerging technologies and contribute to innovative technological development and the establishment of international norms.

Vice Minister Ryu Je-myung will share Korea's policy cases and discuss cooperation plans on topics such as Emerging Technologies (AI and Quantum Technologies) and international cooperation on AI. He will introduce Korea's major AI policies, including the APEC AI Initiative, AI Highway Project, and AI Safety Institute, emphasizing the importance of proactive responses to AI-driven changes and international cooperation. He will also present Korea's achievements and future vision for quantum technology development and propose practical cooperation measures, including joint research with G7 members and participation in standards-related working groups.

On the sidelines of the ministerial meeting, he will have bilateral meetings with the heads of delegations from G7 countries including Canada, the United States, Japan, the European Union, the United Kingdom, and Germany to exchange views on key interests in science, technology, and digital fields such as AI and quantum technology, and discuss concrete cooperation plans.

Furthermore, he will visit Mila - Quebec Artificial Intelligence Institute in Montreal, Canada, a world-class research institute, to review the current state of its joint research with Korea’s national AI research hubs. Vice Minister Ryu and Mila’s president and CEO Valerie Pisano will discuss directions for AI cooperation with Korea, including joint research and talent exchange.

Vice Minister Ryu said, “Korea is striving to achieve a balance between innovation and responsibility in emerging technologies. We will work closely with G7 nations to establish international norms for emerging technologies, strengthen supply chains, advance research and development, promote talent exchange, and ensure an inclusive digital transformation.”
