On the occasion of President Lee’s state visit to Mongolia, the Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT; Deputy Prime Minister and Minister Bae Kyung-hoon) signed an MOU on Science and Technology Cooperation and an MOU on Digital Technology Cooperation with Mongolian counterparts to lay the foundation for future cooperation on July 9, 2026.

1. Laying the Foundation for Science and Technology Cooperation

​

The MSIT signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Science and Technology Cooperation (hereinafter referred to as “MOU on Science and Technology”) with the Ministry of Economy and Development of Mongolia in the fields of bio-engineering, mineral resources including critical minerals and rare earth elements, climate change and environment, energy, and information technology (IT) and artificial intelligence (AI). The MOU on Science and Technology intends to strengthen bilateral collaboration through policy exchange, joint research, cooperation in international forums, talent exchange, and cooperation between institutions.

This MOU on Science and Technology and the third Korea-Mongolia Joint Committee Meeting on Science and Technology, which was held for the first time in 14 years, will provide a strong foundation for bilateral cooperation and bringing together the strengths and capabilities of both nations.

​

2. Paving the Way for Digital Technology Cooperation

​

Furthermore, the MSIT signed an MOU on Digital Cooperation with the Ministry of Digital Development and Communications of Mongolia in the areas of AI, next-generation telecommunications, ICT equipment, digital transformation, and modernization of high-power radio broadcasting infrastructure. This MOU on Digital Cooperation includes diverse forms of collaboration such as information exchanges, joint research, cooperation in international forums, and talent exchanges.

Following the MOU on Information and Telecommunication Technology Cooperation between Korea and Mongolia, this MOU on Digital Cooperation is significance in that it will take bilateral AI cooperation to the next level, while also promoting collaboration to help support Mongolia’s digital transformation.

​

Deputy Prime Minister Bae stated, that “On the occasion of today’s Korea-Mongolia Summit, we have laid a solid foundation for bilateral cooperation in science, technology and digital technology. Building on this foundation, we will bring together the strengths and capabilities of both nations and further strengthen our cooperation in a mutually beneficial way.”
